Biography

Robert Fabe was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1917. He grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began the study of painting with his father, a talented amateur. He took art courses at Withrow High School, in Cincinnati (1932-1936) in conjunction with the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Robert entered the Cincinnati Art Academy after graduation (four year scholarship) and studied with Herman Wessel, John E. Weis and Meyer Abel.
He received the "Out of Town" Scholarship to the Art Student's League in New York in 1939. He studied at the Art Student's League with Arnold Blanch, George Grosz and Raphael Soyer. He was mural assistant to Arnold Blanch in 1939.
Fabe returned to Cincinnati and opened a studio in 1940-1941. He entered into the Armed Services in Infantry and Combat Engineer's Division in 1941 and served in Europe for 2 1/2 years. He was discharged in 1945. He returned to Cincinnati in 1945 to paint and taught art at the Art Academy.
He did interior decorating and freelance work. Fabe joined the faculty of the University of Cincinnati Department of Design, Architecture and Art in 1958, where he retired as a professor of Fine Arts in 1987.
