Joe studied art at Ohio State University. His interest in painting along with a fascination for the country life led him to his detailed portrayals of the ever-vanishing rural scenes. His landscapes depict the rustic beauty surrounding his studio in Hillsboro, Ohio. He also enjoys still-life paintings utilizing objects from his

collection of Americana. Smith has had a number of one-man shows and his work is included in both private and corporate collections.
