Biography

(American, 20th Century)

Joan Rothel is a realist watercolor artist from Cincinnati, Ohio. Turning to nature as a source of ideas, her paintings are realistic in content yet reflect the essence of the moment. Good drawing, sensitive color and a mastery of watercolor combined with her love of nature result in paintings with universal appeal. Well known in Cincinnati as an award winning artist and teacher, Joan’s work can be seen in shows throughout the Cincinnati area as well as in many national juried competitions.

Joan considers herself a realistic but interpretive artist. Her love of nature is reflected in her paintings of quiet farmland, delicate flowers or local scenes. She frequently paints "on the spot" in Mt. Adams, Eden Park, or Covington. Her paintings combine the mood of the moment and a knowledge of nature.

As she says, "I strive for the elegance, beauty. and the ethereal in nature. I prefer to work on a series of paintings based on a theme. As I work through several paintings my approach becomes more personal and the last painting or two the most creative.”

Ms. Rothel taught watercolor for the Adult Education program at Forest Hills School District, and the Baker/Hunt Foundation in Covington, Kentucky. She has exhibited work in many shows, both locally, and across the nation. In 1986, Ms. Rothel was awarded the Top Merit Prize in the Annual Regional Art Exhibit in Indianapolis, Indiana, and two merit awards from the Ohio Watercolor Society '86 Show. She is also the recipient of awards in Bluegrass '87, and Watercolor USA '87.
