Lee Craigmile

(Scottish b. 1985)

Biography

Born in 1985, Lee Craigmile grew up in the seaside town of Largs, Scotland, where he first developed his interest in the Scottish landscape and his passion for painting. In 2005 Craigmile enrolled into the continuing education program at The Glasgow School of Art, where he studied drawing and painting for several years. He then moved to Florence, Italy in 2012 to study traditional painting techniques at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art. Lee graduated from the Florence Academy in June of 2015, and has now moved back to Largs where he has set up his painting studio.

Lee's primary focus as an artist is landscape painting, where he combines his love of nature, atmosphere and rich painterly brushstrokes. His aim as an artist is to create paintings that express the beauty of the world around him as faithfully as possible, while conveying the emotional feel and atmosphere of his subjects. He finds inspiration from Old Masters such as Eugene Carriere, John Singer Sargent, J.M.W. Turner, Vincent Van Gogh and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot.

Lee currently splits his time between working on commissions in his personal studio, giving plein-air landscape painting workshops, and teaching at the Glasgow School of Art. He hopes to inspire others—just as he himself was inspired as a youth—to realise the truth that one can achieve exceptional works of art through the mastery of traditional techniques and by looking to the beauty of nature and the great artists of the past.

Lee’s work has been exhibited widely throughout the U.K., Europe, and The U.S. and can be found in numerous private collections.
